Mirthe van der Valk is a Dutch Gastroenterologist with a PhD, trained in the Netherlands and South Africa, and a mum of three. She moved to New Zealand in 2022 and has since been working at Middlemore Hospital, focusing on patients with liver disease and liver cancer.

She is a generalist who treats a wide range of gastroenterology conditions, including reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, IBD, liver disease (including fatty liver), and performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. At Ormiston, she also performs gastroscopies and colonoscopies and offers consultations with flexible appointments, including evening and Saturday clinics, as well as virtual consultations to suit busy lives.

Known for her kind and caring nature, Mirthe takes a holistic, patient-centred approach with a special interest in lifestyle medicine. Living with type 1 diabetes herself, she understands the challenges of managing health alongside work, parenting and daily life.

Her goal is to support patients in understanding their symptoms, managing their conditions, and improving their health with clear communication and respect for their values and goals.

Outside of work, she loves exploring New Zealand’s natural beauty - multisport and adventure racing, skiing, hiking, and camping with family and friends.
